The short version

Rectify International compares take-home pay after tax and rent in four data centre hubs. Frankfurt beats London and Helsinki, but trails the US by about €17,300 a year. The median electrical engineer's pay in Frankfurt is about €79,800. Matching Northern Virginia takes €114,000 to €120,000.

London, 14 October 2026. A Frankfurt employer would need to pay an electrical engineer about €114,000 to €120,000 a year to leave them as well off as the median engineer in the Washington DC metro area, according to new analysis by Rectify International, the specialist data centre and MEP recruiter. The median electrical engineer's pay in Frankfurt is about €79,800.

The analysis took official median pay for electrical engineers in four data centre hubs, applied each country's 2026 income tax and employee social contribution rules for a single person, and deducted a year's rent for a one-bed home. A median engineer around Washington DC, which includes Northern Virginia's data centre corridor, keeps about €57,900 a year after tax and rent. The figure is €40,600 in Frankfurt, €35,500 in Helsinki and €28,800 in London.

Germany takes the largest share of pay of the four countries. At the median, 39.9% of a Frankfurt engineer's gross salary goes on income tax and social contributions, compared with 24.5% in London. The OECD's Taxing Wages 2026 report puts the four countries in the same order. Lower rents in Frankfurt offset most of the difference: a one-bed rent takes about 15% of a Frankfurt engineer's take-home pay, against about 46% in London.

The findings come as data centre hiring in Europe runs well above pre-pandemic levels. Indeed data reported by Euronews shows data centre job postings in Germany up 25% on pre-pandemic levels by August 2026, and German data centre installation and maintenance roles advertising 36% more than the same jobs in other sectors.

Notes to editors

  1. Gross pay is the official median for electrical engineers, the closest official match for data centre engineering roles: BLS OEWS May 2025 (Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area, $126,420), ONS ASHE 2025 provisional (UK, full-time, £60,303), Hessian State Statistics Office April 2025 (expert-level electrical engineers, €38.36 an hour, annualised at 2,080 hours, excluding special payments) and the TEK labour market survey October 2024 (Finland, €5,732 a month).
  2. Tax and contributions use 2026 rules for a single employee with no children and no church tax, including Virginia state tax and Helsinki municipal tax.
  3. Rent is 12 months of a one-bed home: HUD FY2027 fair market rent for the Washington metro area ($2,204 a month, includes utilities), ONS one-bed average for London (£1,760, August 2026), Statistics Finland median two-room rent for Helsinki (€950, Q2 2026) and the City of Frankfurt Mietspiegel 2026 average (€12.28 per square metre, applied to 50 square metres). At Frankfurt asking rents (immowelt, October 2026) the matching salary rises to about €119,300.
